Ruby Maxwell
Ruby Maxwell, 92, of Crossville, passed away peacefully on July 8th, 2024, surrounded by her loving family and husband Hooper Maxwell.
She was born on June 15, 1932, in Pikeville, Tennessee to the late Luther Hurd and Virgie Rankin Hurd. She married the love of her life, Hooper Maxwell, in 1975, and they celebrated 49 years of marriage together in faith and love.
Ruby was a devoted mother to her children Billy and step-children Greg, Austin (Claire) and Scott (Amanda). She was a proud grandmother to six grandchildren who affectionately called her Grandma Ruby. She loved spending time with her family and friends and other celebrations. She was always ready to offer a hug, a smile, or a word of encouragement to anyone who needed it.
Ruby was a woman of strong faith and a member of Sequatchie Valley Church of Christ. She attended Bledsoe County High School where she was captain of the basketball team, Football Queen, Bledsoe County Sweetheart, Best All Around and was recipient of the Balfour Award. Upon graduation from high school, she put herself through nursing school and served for over 40 years in the profession of nursing in Pikeville and Crossville.
She enjoyed travel and visited many places around the world with her husband and friends, but her favorite destination was always Knoxville, where she could cheer on her beloved Tennessee Volunteers and Lady Vols.
Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, Luther and Virgie Hurd; her son, Billy Johnson; and sisters, Margaret Hickey, Lorraine Hurd, Elizabeth Price, Georgia DeBord, Dorothy Walker and Ina Ruth Reece.
She is survived by the love of her life husband, Hooper Maxwell; and sister, Barbara Webb; step-children, grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
A visitation was held on Thursday July 11, from 4 to 8 PM at the funeral home. Services took place on Friday July 12, in the funeral home chapel at 10:00 a.m. Graveside burial took place at Humble Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. Lunch with friends and family took place at Sequatchie Valley Church of Christ at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Tennessee Nurses Honor Guard by contacting them at 931-260-6287.
