Velma Inez Stone Oakes
Velma Inez Stone Oakes, 92 of Pikeville, Tennessee died January 29, 2022.
Velma worked in a shirt factory for many years, enjoyed taking care of the elderly, and later became a housewife. She was of the Baptist faith, loved doing her yard work, gardening, and taking care of her animals.
Preceding Velma in death was her husband, Paul J. Oakes; parents, Harmon and Mattie Scarbrough Stone, brothers, J. C. Stone, Dewayne Stone; sister, Mae Burgess; brothers-in-law, Boyd Burgess, Earl Evans; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Stone, Uldean Stone.
Left behind to cherish her memory are her sons, Rick (Shirley) Oakes, David Michael (Fannie) Oakes, Mitchell (Carolyn) Oakes; sisters, Liz (Steve) Austin, Edna Evans; grandchildren, Holly (Eric) Bischoff, Lisa (Sean) Gray, Tammy Siems, Jim Oakes, Paul (Shanna) Oakes, Hunter Oakes, and Casey (Rena) Oakes; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; special sister-in-law, Ruth Essex; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.
A celebration of life was held Tuesday, February 1 at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Bro. Jonathan Hankins, Bro. Denny Davis officiating. Burial followed in Blankenship Cemetery with Bro. Casey Oakes speaking. Those serving as pallbearers were Jim Oakes, Hunter Oakes, Casey Oakes, Paul Oakes, Eric Bischoff, and Sean Gray. Honorary pallbearers are Brady Gray, Jackson Gray, Kyle Oakes, Ethan Oakes, and Eli Oakes.
