Murtie Marie Lewis, 89, of Pikeville went home to be with the Lord on Saturday September 17, 2016.
She was a former employee with the Bledsoe County Schools where she worked as a substitute teacher. She enjoyed reading her Bible, teaching children, working crossword puzzles, and writing music and poetry.
Murtie was of the Church of God faith. Besides her family, her proudest accomplishment was completing her GED at the age of 65.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Lewis; son, James Harold Lewis; parents, James A. and Nellie Ann Selby Nail; brother, Austin William Nail; sisters, Annie Lou Tollett, Eula Mae Osborne, Martha Jane Holliman, and Dorothey Lee Modory.
Left behind to cherish her memory are her children, Alvin (Patricia) Lewis, Carlton (Sandra) Lewis, Nina Lockhart, and Brenda Lawerence; grandchildren, Dedra Sterling, Billy Lewis, Kevin Lewis, David Lawerence, Francine Lawerence, Carolyn Kilgore, Donna Kilgore, Farrah Gilbert, Donald Lockhart, Jr., Christy Reece, Tonya Reed, Amandia Stewart, and William Lewis; 17 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; brother, Ben (Joan) Nail; sisters, Betty Aileen Castillo and Mary Frances Caudill; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
A Celebration of Murtie’s life was held in the funeral home chapel on September 20 with Bro. Ronnie Colvard officiating. Burial was in the Blackburn Cemetery.
Pikeville Funeral Home was entrusted with her arrangements.
