Bledsoe County to continue allowing biosolids spreading

Bledsoe County to continue allowing biosolids spreading

Bledsoe County Commissioners heard some of the pros and cons of allowing biosolids to be spread on farmland during a special called meeting Monday, August 26. The purpose of the meeting, as stated on the agenda, was to take action authorizing the county attorney to file an injunction to stop human waste being spread in Bledsoe County.

Commissioners listened to one property owner who had researched on the internet reasons to disallow the spreading. While they heard from many farmers present who utilize the product and whose use is monitored by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC).

Mayor Gregg Ridley expressed his concerns over the welfare of Bledsoe County’s children, and it was his opinion the commission should file the injunction.

The human waste that is being spread on many farms in the county comes from the Hamilton County Waste Treatment and a representative from there explained the product meets the TDEC requirements.

It was over an hour of conversations – some heated,  some for and against, before the commission took a vote on the whether to file the injunction or not. The motion failed by a of eight commissioners against the action, with three in favor, and two absent.

See The Bledsonian-Banner’s issue on August 31 for more details on the meeting and comments.
