The City of Pikeville has applied for a Tennessee America 250 grant in the amount of $20,000 to fund a local celebration of America’s 250 anniversary, announced Mayor Philip Cagle. Plans are being made for an extra-special celebration on July 4th, he said.
The special America 250 – July 4th Celebration will be a community-wide program designed to honor America’s upcoming 250th anniversary through exhibitions, performances, and participatory history projects. This one-day event blends artistic presentation, historical interpretation, and civic celebration, aligning directly with the TN 250 grant’s focus on exhibitions and public programming that deepen Tennesseans’ understanding of the state’s role in the nation’s story, he said.
The celebration will feature live musical performances, fireworks, military displays, and historical exhibitions to highlight Pikeville’s contributions to Tennessee’s cultural and patriotic heritage. A central component of the project is a community history initiative, including oral history collection, local storytelling, and displays developed in partnership with veterans, families, and local historians. These elements will illuminate the lived experiences of Pikeville residents across generations, connecting local narratives to the broader themes of America 250—service, community, resilience, and the evolving meaning of independence.
The goals of the project are to:
•Provide accessible, high quality public programming that celebrates Tennessee’s role in the nation’s 250 year journey
•Preserve and elevate Pikeville’s local history through exhibitions, oral histories, and community generated content
•Foster civic pride and intergenerational engagement through arts, culture, and historical interpretation
•Create a unifying July 4th experience that honors veterans, educates residents, and strengthens community identity
This project is designed for residents of all ages, including families, students, veterans, and visitors from across the region. By combining artistic performances with historical displays and participatory storytelling, he said, Pikeville’s America 250 – July 4th Celebration will serve as a meaningful, inclusive, and educational commemoration—ensuring that the spirit of America 250 is experienced not only as a national milestone, but as a living story rooted in the people of Pikeville and the Upper Cumberland.
