James ‘Charlie’ Rankin
James (Charlie) Rankin, 80, of Johnson City passed away Friday February 21, 2025 at his residence with his family by his side.
He was a native of Pikeville, Tennessee and was a son of the late Harry Lee Rankin and Bertha Clifton Rankin. Charlie had worked for the TVA as a heavy equipment operator for many years. After retirement, he operated the Village Market in Blountville for several years.
Charlie was a people person and had never met a stranger. He loved being outdoors and especially loved fishing. He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Goodman Rankin in 2015; three brothers, J.W. Rankin, Harry Lee Rankin Jr., and Newell Stillwell; a sister, Francis Cagle.
Survivors include his son, Chad (Ann) Rankin of Johnson City; two brothers, Tommy (Jean) Rankin, and Joe Stillwell; three sisters, Rachel Rankin, Loretta (Wendell) Myers, and Wanda Miller; two grandsons, Neil and Dillon Williams; a brother-in-law, Daryl (Lori) Goodman; special nieces, Leslie Payne and Cali Payne; also several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Charlie were held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 25, in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City with Pastor Sherrill Nave and Rev. Toonie Cash officiating.
Graveside services followed at 2:00 p.m. in the Hamlett-Dobson Memorial Park, Blountville. Active pallbearers were Denny Friday, Daryl Goodman, Randy Milhorn, Boots Yarber, Greg Rose and David Bradley; Honorary Pallbearers were Ronnie Hoop, Charlie Fitzgerald and Scott Hawkins.
