Rural doctor residency program making strides in Bledsoe County
“If you grow up in a rural area, and train in a rural area, you’re much more likely to stay there,” Dr. Andrew Smith told those attending the Pikeville-Bledsoe County Chamber of Commerce’s Installation and Awards Banquet on January 25.
He is a professor of The University of Tennessee Science Center (UTHSC) College of Medicine and site director for Family Medicine Residency-Rural Track.
He serves the Bledsoe County community as a physician at the Erlanger Bledsoe Family Medicine, plus is a husband and dad of four children. Dr. Smith was born and raised in Bledsoe County. At a very young age he set his sights on becoming a doctor. During his presentation he shared a photo of him with scrubs on and the wording on the back of the shirt read “Doctor in Training.”
