He is survived by his parents, Pastor Darvin and Jennifer Oakes; sisters, Jana Pratt and Joy (Jack) Howell; brother, Jared (Susan) Oakes; nieces, Bethany (Josh) Simmons, Brittany (Collin) Jones, Grace and Emily Howell and Lily and Elanor Oakes; nephews, Brandon (Sarah) Shope, William Howell and Gabriel and Christopher Oakes; two great-nieces and one great-nephew; and many dear friends.

DJ was a special person. To know him was to love him. He was a devoted husband, a caring son, the best brother, the “fun” uncle, and a friend to so many. DJ had a love for Virgil’s root beer, the UT Vols, the Nashville Predators and peanut butter pie. In his free time, he loved planting flowers, playing softball, and doting on his nieces and nephews who were so special to him.

His family was important to him and he loved them fiercely. DJ had the biggest heart and was always ready to help anyone in need. The impact he made on others will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

Funeral services were held Sunday, August 29, at 5:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Darvin Oakes and Pastor Bill Montandon officiating. Burial was in Blankenship Cemetery on Monday, August 30, at 10:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hanna Project-Josh and Bethany as they bring help, hope and healing to those who are in desperate need; a mission that DJ lived out every day of his live. You may give online at or by check (The Hanna Project-Josh and Bethany), P.O. Box 417, Antioch, TN  37011.
