Farmer, small business owner, Bledsoe County commissioner, and community leader Andy Swafford is announcing his candidacy for Tennessee House of Representatives in District 31. He is running in the Republican primary election August 6, with the general election scheduled for November 3.
A lifelong resident of Bledsoe County, Swafford was raised on his family’s farm in the Cold Springs community. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Plant Sciences with a concentration in Genetics and Biotechnology, with a minor in Entrepreneurship from the University of Tennessee, he returned home to invest in the community that raised him.
Today, he serves as a Bledsoe County Commissioner, manages a major agricultural operation for Aviagen North America, plus he owns and operates a farm and small business with his brother, right here in the district.
Swafford said his campaign focuses on protecting rural Tennessee values, keeping taxes low, expanding access to healthcare, improving workforce and technical education, creating jobs that align with the values of the district, supporting agriculture, and ensuring Nashville works for the families and communities of District 31.
“I love this region because it’s home,” Swafford said. “The people of Rhea, Van Buren, Sequatchie, and Bledsoe deserve a strong voice in Nashville who understands rural communities because they live it every day. As a county commissioner, farmer, small-business owner, and supervisor, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges our families face. I’m running to protect our conservative values, create opportunities for the next generation, and make sure rural Tennessee is not left behind.”
Known for his hands-on leadership and commitment to service, Swafford currently serves as Chairman of the Tennessee Young Republicans and represents District 2 on the Bledsoe County Commission, where he serves on the Budget committee and the Agriculture committees among others.
In his professional role with Aviagen North America, he oversees the movement of more than three million eggs each month across North America and manages a team responsible for supporting one of the region’s largest agricultural employers.
Swafford has been active in numerous civic and agricultural organizations throughout his career and remains committed to preserving the traditions, values, and way of life that make rural Tennessee special. He and his wife, Maryanne, reside in Pikeville and are active members of their community.
“For generations, the people of this district have built strong families, churches, farms, and businesses through hard work and determination,” Swafford said. “I believe our best days are still ahead of us. Together we can strengthen our economy, protect our freedoms, and ensure that our children and grandchildren have every opportunity to succeed right here at home.”
