City approves burnout pad to draw car enthusiasts, tourists

To bring car enthusiasts and boost local business, Pikeville City officials approved a new project for a burnout pad downtown. Their decision was made during their Monday, July 13 meeting.

Aldermen Senia Anderson, Jane Humble, Jeania Lansing, and Dale Wheeler approved unanimously moving forward with the project to create a burnout pad for cars, essentially a concrete area with anchors to chain the cars in place as they do burnouts and spectators watch.

Mayor Philip Cagle said he came up with the idea as something unique that could set Pikeville apart from other towns and draw in car enthusiasts to downtown and in turn support surrounding businesses while here.

He told the City Council at last week’s meeting the project is expected to cost labor only for pouring the concrete, and materials such as the concrete will be donated. He added the concrete would have little to no upkeep and pavement had more upkeep than concrete.
