Sam Watson, 65, of Pikeville died Saturday, June 2, 2018.
He was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, loved farming, hunting, fishing and watching football of any kind. He played high school football as a fullback in the late 60s and early 70s. Sam worked at La-Z-Boy as a machine operator and in maintenance for 37 years. He also laid brick and block for several years in his free time. Sam was one of the founding members of the Griffith Volunteer Fire Department.
Preceding him in death were his parents, James and Bessie Cripps Watson; brother Gilbert Watson.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Sharon R. Watkins Watson; children, Shenia (Barry) Derrick of South Carolina, Shonda (William) Holt, Sam T. (Kristen) Watson, Chris (Ashley) Roberts; siblings, Treva (Lee) Gore, Elizabeth (Hoyt) Hale, James (Carolyn) Watson, L.J. (Sharon) Watson of Dunlap, and Lela Watson; nine grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. Sam had three good caretakers during his illness Lisa L., Lisa B., and Susan B.
A Celebration of Life was held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 5 in the funeral home chapel with Bro. Steve Haston and Bro. Casey Oakes officiating. Burial was in Akins Cemetery in Cumberland County.
Those serving as pallbearers were Gary Everett, Bobby Collier, Sheldon Simmons, Howard Upchurch, Dennis Smith and Terry Hickey with honorary pallbearers being members of the Griffith Volunteer Fire Department and BCHS Alumni Football.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Griffith Volunteer Fire Department.
