Herbert Edward Swafford

Herbert Edward Swafford, 79, of Battle Creek, Michigan and formerly of Pikeville, died Sunday morning, November 20, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Swafford was born in the second month on the sixth day, 1937 in Pikeville, Tennessee to Marshall and Margaret Marie (Rothwell) Swafford. He was a graduate of the Bledsoe County High School. He has been a resident of the Michigan area since 1954 coming here with the military. He served in the United States Air Force and was stationed in the Battle Creek area. Herbert enjoyed a long and successful career working with the Kellogg Company. He worked in the Processing Department and retired in 1996, after 30 years of faithful service. On August 21, 1959, he married the former Clara Frances Yates in Battle Creek. She preceded him in death on January 17, 2003. Mr. Swafford was a proud American and a devoted Christian. He was a member of the Battle Creek First Assembly of God. He served the Lord faithfully and traveled the world on many Mission trips. A very special trip occurred in 2000, when he took his father to Israel. Many fond memories were created. Herbert was a member of the Battle Creek American Legion #0298 and was a member of the Battle Creek Masonic Lodge. He was a farmer by heart and loved working with the land. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He is remembered by his family as a loving husband, father and grandfather. He loved family gatherings and spending time with his grandchildren. Herbie had never met a stranger and included everyone as family. He was affectionately called “Papa,” by all that knew him. He is survived by his children, Sonya (David) Labrecque of Battle Creek, Michigan and Lloyd (Diane) Swafford of Evansville; four grandchildren, Zachary (Alejandra) Labrecque, Alexandra (Dakota) Labrecque-Pendergrass, Ashley (Corey) Swafford-Roberts and Tyler (Jessica) Swafford; great-grandchildren, Layne Roberts, Westyn Roberts, Jasiah Swafford and soon to be introduced, Isabella Labrecque. He is also survived by brothers, Wayne Swafford, Herschel Swafford, Marshall Swafford Jr., and Willard Swafford, all of Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara (2003); and parents, Marshall (2016) and Margaret (2011) Swafford. A funeral service to celebrate the gift of his life was held Wednesday, November 23, at the funeral home with Pastor Robert Muirhead and Pastor Steve Amaro officiating. Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Battle Creek.
