Joe Greer Akin, 82, of Catlettsburg, Kentucky went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 in Jo-Lin Health Center.
He was born March 5, 1932 in Pikeville, a son of the late Henry R. and Kitty Swafford Akin.
Joe was a United States Army Veteran of the Korean War, a member of post 93 American Legion, Kenova, WV, member of WV Veterans of Foreign Wars at Large of Post 15050, and a Kentucky Colonel. Joe was retired from and co-founder of Akin Asphalt Paving Inc. Catlettsburg, Kentucky, a Christian and active member of Buchanan Chapel, UMC since 1983, where he was Trustee Chairman.
Survivors include, his loving wife, Sharma Lee Woods Akin, Catlettsburg, Kentucky; two sons, Larry Joe (Darcy), Norfolk, Virginia, and Gregory Paul (Cindi), New Smyrna Beach, Florida; two daughters, Mitzie Gail (David) Katerndahl, San Antonia, Texas, and Pamela Dawn (Vince) Doty, Louisa, Kentucky; four grandchildren, Marc Akin, Sommer Akin, Jennifer Farar and Aubrey Doty; three step-grandchildren, Shelby Wheeler, and Tiffany and Tarah Katerndahl; brother, Henry C. Akin, Pikeville; one sister, Marie Myers, Pikeville; and many nieces and nephews.
No visitation, but grave side rights were conducted at Buchanan Chapel, UMC by Pastor Keith Workman on June 6 with burial in the Buchanan Chapel Cemetery, Catlettsburg, Kentucky. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Lawrence County Humane Society, 820 Isaac Park Road, Louisa, KY 41230 or Trixie Foundation, 1167 Kennel Creek Lane, Webbville, KY 41180.
