Alma Layne

    Alma Lorene Bayless Layne, 93, wife of Richard “Dick” Thurman Layne of Richmond, Virginia passed away November 1, 2010. She was born to Richard Henry and Mary Moore Bayless on September 17, 1917 in Pikeville, and was the second eldest of seven children.

    She taught school in Tennessee, then served as a WAVE in World War II, where she met her husband in Richmond. They lived in Fredericksburg and moved to Henrico County, where she taught school, raised two sons and commuted to the University of Virginia to earn her master’s degree. She was a dedicated teacher for over 33 years in Henrico schools and taught Sunday School at Hatcher Memorial Church.

    She was preceded in death by her grandson, John Robert Layne.

    She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Richard T. Layne; and their sons and spouses, Richard Lee and Nancy Newman Layne of Montpelier, Virginia, and Robert Thurman and Judith Dean Layne of Richmond, Virginia; three loving granddaughters, Kathryn Lorene Davis of Buckingham, Virginia, Carol Layne Minter and Lindsey Dean Layne, both of Richmond, Virginia; three remaining siblings, David Bayless and Marion Keyt of Tennessee and Henry Bayless of New Mexico. She is also cherished by her three great-grandchildren, Stephen Richard, Martha Elayne Davis and Silas Layne Minter, who knew her as “GG”; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

    There will be a memorial service at Hatcher Memorial Church at 2300 Dumbarton Road, Richmond, Virginia, at 11:00 a.m. on November 20, followed by a light reception at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Hatcher Memorial Church.
